Dubai City Review & Pictures

Is Dubai the city of the future, or the condensation of the worst developments of the past decennia; is it a fantasy, or is it all just fake; is it a dream, or actually a nightmare, is it a utopia, or just an investment enterprise…?

Last Tuesday, 13th of March 2007, George Katodrytis and Kees Christiaanse duelled with each other in the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam about the question whether the developments in the city of Dubai are positive or negative. Like a stroboscope they portrayed the city alternately as illuminated and dark, white and black.
Architecture critic Roemer van Toorn was our host that evening. The Dialogue lecture series this semester is part of the Architecture Biennale (theme: ‘Power’) that is organized by the Berlage Institute this summer in Rotterdam. Unfortunately the third speaker of the Dialogue, Marc Angélil, couldn’t make it by airplane from Zurich because of a fog obscuring the runway.
Van Toorn started off by quoting critical comments by Mike Davis on Dubai, on the internet, and celebrating comments by Rem Koolhaas/AMO, that he made on the last Venice Biennale. “Dubai becomes a single experience, instead of multiple experiences”, Koolhaas notes. Van Toorn also showed a short film about Dubai Waterfront, which hilariously features Winy Maas of MVRDV designing beaches.

Rosewood Hotels is expanding its empire to Dubai. Or Dubai is expanding its empire to Rosewood Hotels. We’re not quite sure which commercial giant is exploiting which. Either way, a group of investors announced in a press conference yesterday plans to build the Rosewood Dubai International Financial Centre.
The hotel will have 157 deluxe rooms, 36 suites and a Royal Suite. It will also offer fine dining in two outlets, a gala ballroom, a business center, and the Rosewood Spa with rooftop pool and fitness center.
The Rosewood franchise already owns The Carlyle in NYC, a few other five-star joints in Texas and California, and several others in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
Doors will open in late 2009. Until then, we’re fairly certain most traveling businessman already know Dubai restaurants don’t serve alcohol, but most Dubai hotels do. Don’t say we never did anything for you.
Weburbanist has a neat post about 5 Places You’ve Probably Never Thought to Go Skiing. Amongst the far out places are Lebanon (check the weather and the political climate before you go), Bolivia (the highest ski slope in the world) and this one above: Dubai.
The Ski Dubai indoor slope has over 20,000 square meters of interior space and accommodates snowboarding and sledding in addition to skiing. Since it is, of course, not weather-dependent it is open all year round with five runs of varying difficulty and a freestyle zone. The building is highly energy-efficient but of course no indoor ski area in the desert can be considered environmentally friendly

Palm Trump Hotel in Dubai

This has to be the best looking building from master marketer and developer Donald Trump. This one is in Dubai and it is already selling fast. Architecture at it’s finest!
