Oryukdo Island Marine Protected Area Most Favourite Tourism In Busan Korea

Oryukdo Island is attached to the southern part of Busan, and depending on the day and the tide, may appear to be five islands or six islands, hence its name. Designated a Monument of Busan, Oryukdo Island is a rock island that can be said to be made purely of stones. Of all the five islands branching out from the mainland.

The Oryukdo Island Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a new protected area devised in 2006, according to the enactment of 'Law on Conservation and Management of Marine Ecosystem' by Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, which is now merged into Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs(MLTM hereafter). In fact, this newly named MPA has its origin from the "Ecosystem and Landscape Conservation Area" under the "Natural Environment Conservation Act" before this law was split into and applied separately to land and sea. Now, MLTM has an authority to manage the MPAs of the country.

As of September 2008, Korea has designated four MPAs, which include sand dune or underwater ecosystems around small islands. Although the total area of four MPAs of 70.4 accounts for only a small portion of total sea area(71,000 ), and it is also smaller than total coastal wetland protected areas(173 ), each of four MPAs is a representative marine ecosystem of Korea and need to be managed in a sustainable manner. In future, it seems that more ecosystems will be designated and managed as MPAs.
